De Noche is Todd Haynes' period queer romance that weathered a challenging production journey and is now in post-production. The film stars Pedro Pascal as a hard-boiled detective and Danny Ramirez as a boarding school teacher in a passionate love affair set against 1930s Los Angeles corruption. After Joaquin Phoenix departed days before the original 2024 shoot, Pascal stepped in and production relocated from Guadalajara to Mexico City. Killer Films' Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler produced, with Haynes and Jon Raymond co-writing the screenplay. MK2 Films financed and is handling international sales alongside Cinetic Media for domestic rights. Netflix is fast-tracking development of a Lincoln Lawyer spinoff built around Cobie Smulders' Emi Finch character. The series is being written by Lincoln Lawyer executive producers Ted Humphrey, Dailyn Rodriguez, and Matthew J. Lieberman, with A+E Studios producing. The three writers pitched the concept to Netflix in August 2026, and the streamer commissioned a script on the spot for quick turnaround. Emi—an original character created for the Netflix series as Mickey Haller's previously unknown half-sister—debuted in the Season 4 finale and will be a series regular in Season 5. Like the parent series, the spinoff is targeting Los Angeles as a production base if it qualifies for California tax credits. The Ones With the Tempered Flowers is Neema Ngelime's feature documentary debut, currently in late development as a Tanzania-Kenya co-production. The participatory, performative documentary explores themes of womanhood and motherhood through Ngelime's personal journey after being told that having children might be difficult. The film will combine constructed archives, observational family material, cinema verité performances, stop-motion, and visual effects to interrogate women's bodies and the expectations placed upon them in contemporary Tanzania. Producer Ivy Kiru is steering the project through LBx Africa and AQ Pictures, based in Nairobi. The project has participated in development labs at LBx Africa, Berlinale Talents, and most recently won two awards at Locarno Open Doors 2026, including the ARTEKino International Award and the Sørfond Award. With €90,000 of its €400,000 budget secured, the production is seeking European broadcasters and auteur-focused co-producers ahead of a planned July 2027 shoot in Tanzania.

The She-Devil is a Brazilian feature film in development from co-directors Clara Ferrer and Tainá Bevilacqua, adapted from Eli Lemos de Oliveira's autofiction book. Set in working-class Rio de Janeiro during the 1990s, the coming-of-age story follows 11-year-old Araí, a young trans man who develops an obsession with an imaginary killer attacking girls in his neighborhood, while adoring his aunt Iara for her transgressive way of living and the guidance she offers. Shirley Cruz, acclaimed for her lead performance in Anna Muylaert's 2025 Berlinale drama The Best Mother in the World, stars as Aunt Iara. Ferrer writes the screenplay and has previously written Four Girls, which premiered at the 2026 Berlinale. Capivara Movies, the Rio de Janeiro-based production company founded in 2024, is producing with Amina Sophia Nogueira executive producing and Laura Fazoli as producer. Retrato Filmes is attached as Brazilian distributor. A companion short film, The Death of the She-Devil, is currently in post-production.

Tower Defense is a spec screenplay acquisition by Paramount Primal, the studio's genre label run by producers J. D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. Written by Evan Daugherty, the screenwriter behind Snow White and the Huntsman and Divergent, the project is described as a medieval and supernatural fantasy take on the siege concept from John Carpenter's 1976 thriller Assault on Precinct 13. The script was acquired without filmmaker or producer attachments, marking one of the early acquisitions for the label, which launched in late 2025. Paramount Primal focuses on smartly-budgeted genre films across horror, action, comedy, and science fiction, and has been moving quickly to build its slate.

Two Gun Cohen marks the English-language debut of acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To, who has described the project as a 'dim sum Western.' The film tells the true story of Morris Cohen, a Jewish immigrant who settled in the Canadian prairies in the early 1900s and met Dr. Sun Yat-sen before Sun rose to become the father of modern China. Patrick Whistler is attached to write the screenplay, and the project has received development backing from Telefilm Canada. Rawk will present the project at the Frontieres co-production market in Toronto this September, seeking financiers, co-producers, and sales partners.

Makoto Shinkai is deep into development on his eighth feature-length anime film, the follow-up to his globally successful disaster trilogy.
