The Ones With the Tempered Flowers

The Ones With the Tempered Flowers is Neema Ngelime's feature documentary debut, currently in late development as a Tanzania-Kenya co-production. The participatory, performative documentary explores themes of womanhood and motherhood through Ngelime's personal journey after being told that having children might be difficult. The film will combine constructed archives, observational family material, cinema verité performances, stop-motion, and visual effects to interrogate women's bodies and the expectations placed upon them in contemporary Tanzania. Producer Ivy Kiru is steering the project through LBx Africa and AQ Pictures, based in Nairobi. The project has participated in development labs at LBx Africa, Berlinale Talents, and most recently won two awards at Locarno Open Doors 2026, including the ARTEKino International Award and the Sørfond Award. With €90,000 of its €400,000 budget secured, the production is seeking European broadcasters and auteur-focused co-producers ahead of a planned July 2027 shoot in Tanzania.
