Project Summary
It's 1939 — and much like today, economic turmoil, racial tension, and political division consume America. When world-renowned Black opera singer Marian Anderson is denied the opportunity to perform in Washington, D.C. because of the color of her skin, she uses the power of her one voice to transform a historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial into a defining moment of unity, hope, and change. The production is based at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery, AL, with first rehearsal on or about January 26, 2027, opening February 25, 2027, and closing March 14, 2027. The score includes pieces from Marian Anderson's repertoire to be classically sung, alongside original songs in a modern musical theatre style inspired by blues, gospel, jazz, and big band.
