Untitled Makoto Shinkai Anime Feature

Makoto Shinkai is deep into development on his eighth feature-length anime film, the follow-up to his globally successful disaster trilogy. The project has been in preparation since 2023, with Shinkai teasing that the film will present a new world that audiences have never seen before. Plot details, title, and release date remain undisclosed, though the director has indicated he expects to share concrete details by the end of 2026. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle worldwide distribution outside Asia, continuing their partnership from Suzume. The film marks Shinkai's first project since his 2022 hit Suzume, which grossed over $300 million worldwide. Production company CoMix Wave Films is expected to be involved based on Shinkai's established collaboration with the studio.
