The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the United Kingdom's publicly funded national broadcaster and the world's oldest and largest national broadcasting organisation, established as a public corporation on 1 January 1927. Funded principally by an annual television licence fee and commercial revenue from its wholly owned subsidiary BBC Studios (formerly BBC Worldwide), it employs approximately 21,918 staff and reported total revenue of £5.389 billion in 2024. The BBC produces, commissions, and distributes television, radio, and digital content across the UK and internationally through channels including BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, BBC iPlayer, BBC News, BBC World News, and the BBC World Service, which broadcasts in over 40 languages to 150+ countries. As of mid-2026, the BBC is navigating charter renewal negotiations (current charter expires 31 December 2027), potential licence fee reform, and a savings plan involving approximately 2,000 redundancies, under new Director-General Matt Brittin (effective 18 May 2026).
