Act of Service

Act of Service is a feature documentary from director and producer Ilie Mitaru, expanding on his award-winning BBC reporting about the VALOR program in Collin County, Texas. The film provides access to incarcerated veterans confronting invisible wounds of military service while participating in an equine therapy initiative inside a Texas jail. Produced by Peabody Award winner Alex Lieberman, the documentary is a collaboration between Mitaru's Format Films and Bright West Entertainment, with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America joining as executive producer. Dr. Kyleanne Hunter and Manuel Gomez also serve as executive producers. The film documents the Veterans Accessing Lifelong Opportunities for Rehabilitation program, developed by Judge John Roach Jr. and Sheriff Jim Skinner, both veterans and horsemen, with support from horse trainer and Vietnam veteran Pat Puckett. The documentary is expected to reach audiences in 2027.
