A Minecraft Movie Squared is currently in production in New Zealand, with principal photography underway as of May 2026. Director Jared Hess returns to helm the sequel, working from a script he co-wrote with Chris Galletta. Jack Black reprises his role as Steve, the expert crafter from the first film, while Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst joins the cast as Alex, the iconic character teased in the original's post-credits sequence. The returning ensemble includes Jason Momoa as Garrett Garrison, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Matt Berry in an undisclosed role. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are producing alongside Mojang Studios and Vertigo Entertainment, with the production team led by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, and Kayleen Walters. Filming is taking place across multiple locations in Auckland, supported by Weta's visual effects work. The sequel is scheduled for theatrical release on July 23, 2027.
