A production office is the temporary base a film or series sets up for the length of the job, run by the production coordinator under the unit production manager. It opens in pre-production and closes shortly after the wrap. What the office is, and is not

The production office is not the production company. The company (a studio, a network, an independent) is permanent and has a corporate address; the office is set up per project, often in rented space near the stages or locations, and staffed by the coordinator, assistant coordinator, secretary and production assistants. Crew inquiries, vendor pitches, location offers and casting submissions all pass through it.

It exists from early pre-production until a few weeks after wrap. Writing to a production office for a project that has finished shooting reaches nobody; writing to one for a project in development reaches an office that does not exist yet.

How to write to it

Address the email to the department or person it is for, in the subject line: “Attn: Art Department, set dresser availability, October”. The coordinator forwards it. Keep it to a few lines and one attachment. Phone calls go through the same desk; be ready to say in one sentence who you are and which department you are asking for.

Do not send a general “any openings?” note. Offices receive hundreds and cannot route them.
