Netflix is developing a survival epic based on the story of Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton and the extraordinary rescue of his crew from the 1914 Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Phil Barantini, fresh off directing the Emmy-winning limited series Adolescence for Netflix, will helm the film from an original screenplay by Mark L. Smith, the Oscar-nominated writer of The Revenant. The film chronicles the legendary journey that began when Shackleton's ship, The Endurance, became trapped and crushed by ice in the Antarctic, forcing the crew to survive for months on ice floes before Shackleton led a lifeboat journey to bring rescue to all 27 men without a single fatality. The producing team includes Cliff Roberts, Smith, Michael Pruss, Joey McFarland, Brian Oliver, Samantha Beddoe, Barantini, and Ridley Scott. Netflix hopes to get the project into production next year, aiming to lock Barantini into an overall deal as a cornerstone director following his work on Adolescence and the upcoming series Rabbit, Rabbit starring Adam Driver.
