Project Summary

Sands of Sarasvati is a Finland-U. K. co-production eco-thriller now in development with director Antti-Jussi Annila attached to helm. The film is adapted from Risto Isomäki's award-winning novel, which won the Tähtivaeltaja Award and received a Finlandia Prize nomination. The screenplay is co-written by Annila and Scottish-Egyptian screenwriter Rachelle Atalla. The project is produced by Kai Nordberg and Kaarle Aho of Helsinki-based Making Movies alongside Rakasree Basu of Glasgow-based Momentum Films. Production is planned to span the Nordic countries, Scotland, and India. The story centers on scientists investigating ancient underwater ruins discovered off India's west coast while simultaneously confronting the threat of catastrophic flooding from melting polar ice sheets. Making Movies, marking its 30th year, brings a track record that includes the Oscar-shortlisted The Fencer. The project was unveiled at the Cannes Film Market in May 2026.
