King of Hearts

King of Hearts is a historical drama series in development at Flemish broadcaster VRT, created by Giles Coulier of De Wereldvrede, the production company behind War of the Worlds and Prix Europa winner Albatros. Based on real events, the series follows Baudouin, who became King of Belgium before he was ready, forced to navigate mounting political pressure as Belgium faced internal crisis and his family fractured around him. The series spans multiple international locations including Brussels, Leopoldville, Rome, and Madrid, intertwining Belgium's monarchy with Congolese independence, Cold War geopolitics, and Catholic influence. The project has secured script funding from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund and has been selected for the inaugural Euro-Atlantic Co-Pro Pitch program at Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid. De Wereldvrede and VRT are seeking international co-production partners to bring this ambitious prestige drama to audiences beyond Belgium.
