Aron Ralston Untitled Project

National Geographic Documentary Films has greenlit a feature documentary from Academy Award-winning director James Marsh about mountaineer Aron Ralston, whose 2003 canyoneering accident inspired the 2010 film 127 Hours. Produced by Magna Studios, the project marks Marsh's first feature documentary since his 2011 DGA Award-winning Project Nim. The film will center on archival footage Ralston shot while pinned by a boulder in Bluejohn Canyon, Utah, documenting his innermost thoughts over six days before he made the decision to sever his own arm to survive. Carolyn Bernstein, EVP of National Geographic Documentary Films, called the project a collaboration with a dream director on a deeply human survival story. The documentary is slated for a 2027 release on National Geographic platforms.
