Project Summary
The Blue Breaks is a Japan-Italy co-production directed by Uchiyama Takuya, whose previous film Numb premiered at the 2025 Berlinale. The project adapts Machiya Ryohei's 2016 novel, following Shukichi, a rootless part-time worker in his thirties living at Japan's western edge. After discovering his girlfriend has a son she no longer has custody of, and spending a night with a solitary boxer of Korean descent, Shukichi's sense of identity and sexuality are thrown into confusion. He meets Toko, a terminally ill young woman whose outlook gradually leaves its mark on him. The film is produced by Naomi Satoh through Differentia, with Parsifal Reparato of Italian company Antropica as co-producer. The project was presented at the seventh Tokyo Gap-Financing Market in October 2026, seeking to close financing before moving into production.
