Project Summary

Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher is set to write and direct a feature adaptation of Italo Calvino's beloved 1957 novel The Baron in the Trees. The project reunites Rohrwacher with Rome-based producers Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli through their Our Films banner, the Mediawan-backed production company behind Cannes winner Fatherland. Calvino's Viareggio Prize-winning novel follows young Cosimo Piovasco di RondΓ², who climbs into the trees of his family estate as an act of rebellion and remains there for life, navigating independence, community, and the Enlightenment era from his arboreal kingdom. Rohrwacher, whose Happy as Lazzaro won Best Screenplay at Cannes and whose short Le Pupille earned an Oscar nomination, is currently finishing production on Three Incestuous Sisters. According to industry reports, The Baron in the Trees is targeting a production start in the second half of 2027, following the expected Cannes premiere of her current film.
