Hatchet

Hatchet returns to the screen in a new feature adaptation for Netflix, with Derek Cianfrance writing and directing Gary Paulsen's beloved 1987 survival novel. The story follows Brian Robeson, a 13-year-old who becomes stranded alone in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash, armed only with the hatchet his mother gave him before departure. Andrew Mittman produces through his 1. 21 production company, the banner behind Netflix's Wednesday. The project has been developed in partnership with the Paulsen estate, which was involved in selecting Cianfrance after years of keeping the adaptation rights off the market. Jennifer Flannery and Sandy Weinberg represent the estate and serve as executive producers alongside Ruth Wright Paulsen and James Wright Paulsen, while Kai Dolbashian executive produces via 1. 21. Netflix brought the project into development as part of its continued investment in survival thrillers following the success of films like Apex and Thrash earlier this year.
