Project Summary
Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings is a three-part true crime docuseries ordered by Prime Video as part of its expanding Australian originals slate. Produced by Cineflix for Amazon MGM Studios, the series reconstructs the tragic 2024 incident in Laos where eight backpackers traveling through Southeast Asia suffered methanol poisoning after a night out. Six died and one of the two survivors was left permanently blind. The docuseries draws on the travelers' own phone footage, final voice messages and interviews with the surviving backpacker and victims' families to piece together what led to the tragedy and the search for answers that followed. The project will stream globally on Prime Video with a launch planned for 2027.
