Things Are Looking Up

Things Are Looking Up is a character-driven comedic drama about two spiritual leaders who find themselves navigating modern life, personal doubt, and unexpected friendship under the same roof. When Father Matt O'Malley's rectory undergoes renovations, he reluctantly advertises for a roommate — only to end up living with Rabbi Dean Silberstein, a warm-hearted, sharp-tongued reform rabbi with a talent for turning crises into punchlines. Their odd-couple dynamic quickly becomes the emotional center of a small circle of struggling neighbors: Marina, a young woman reeling from the collapse of her marriage; Bernard, the building manager with a quiet wisdom; and Burnout, a well-meaning but chaotic wanderer whose past trauma hides beneath his humor. Through weekly "God Night" discussions, impromptu cooking lessons, and late-night confessions, the group forms an unlikely community bound by shared vulnerability. As Father Matt faces criticism from his diocese and a growing crisis of faith, Rabbi Dean helps him confront the deeper question at the heart of his calling: What does it truly mean to serve? Meanwhile, Marina discovers her own strength, Burnout finds belonging, and the entire group learns that healing rarely comes from miracles — it comes from people showing up for one another. Blending humor with heartfelt introspection, Things Are Looking Up explores interfaith friendship, the search for meaning, and the simple, transformative power of compassion. The play is a semifinalist in the New York Theater Festival's International Theater Competition and has been selected for the 11th Annual Santa Monica Playhouse 2026 BFF Binge Fringe Festival of Free Theatre.
