Beautiful Stupid Thing
Project Summary
Beautiful Stupid Thing is a feature-length documentary in post-production from Colombian-Estonian director Carlos E. Lesmes. The film follows Angela, who at 62 uproots her life in Colombia to start anew in Estonia, reuniting with her son Carlos after 13 years apart. What begins as a creative exploration of imagined ancestry becomes an intimate examination of family separation, migration, and reconciliation. The project is produced by Merili Laur through Tallinn-based Tin Can, with co-production support from Colombia's Altiplano. The documentary received backing from the Estonian Film Institute and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, and was selected for the 30th Baltic Sea Docs forum in 2026. The film is targeting a 2026 premiere following completion of post-production work in Estonia.
