Weekly World News is a six-episode comedy series shooting independently outside the traditional studio system with $2. 5 million in private financing. Robert Ben Garant and Cathy Shim serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the mockumentary-style project, which was commissioned by Weekly World News Studios. Greg D'Alessandro, editor-in-chief of Weekly World News, writes and executive produces the series. The production follows the reporters of the satirical tabloid as they track down stories too unconventional for mainstream media, treating every assignment with complete seriousness even as their personalities and ambitions collide. Production begins the first week of February in Simi Valley, California, with Adam Kolbrenner of Lit Entertainment Group and Patrick White co-producing. The series will use written "scriptments" as a foundation for improvisation, and producers plan to pitch the completed season to platforms and distributors once footage is available.
