The Comebacker
Project Summary
The Comebacker is a baseball drama in pre-production at Sony Pictures, with director Marielle Heller reuniting with Tom Hanks after their collaboration on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Heller adapted the screenplay from a Dave Eggers short story, part of his collection The Forgetters. Callum Turner plays a young pitcher for the New York Mets whose life is rocked when he is hit by a batted ball, with Hanks as his pitching coach and Patricia Clarkson as the coach's wife. The production is being made in cooperation with Major League Baseball and the Mets, with filming set to take place around Queens and Citi Field starting in October. Gary Goetzman produces for Playtone alongside Heller and Leah Holzer for Defiant By Nature, with Working Barn executive producing. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on July 30, 2027.
