Friend Thing

Friend Thing is the feature directorial debut of Harry Calbom, who wrote the indie drama alongside producer Bryce Cyrier. The film wrapped principal photography in Seattle in early September 2026 after a 27-day shoot. Set in spring 1996 during the height of Seattle's grunge era, the story follows Ernie Calder, a thoughtful scholarship student at an elite Catholic school navigating first love, friendship, and loss. The cast includes Alfie Williams and Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the lead roles, with supporting performances from Pete Holmes, Lewis Black, Emily Deschanel, Carrie Brownstein, and Nick Thune. Society, the production company founded by Calbom, produced the film alongside Ladd Moore, Bryce Cyrier, and Honna Kimmerer. The film shot throughout Seattle, including at Villa Academy in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, and is targeting a 2027 release.
