Jeff is described as a smart, funny, loving writer's soul, but fear has made him guarded, requiring wit, vulnerability, and naturalistic presence. Lisa is from a privileged background, elegant and beautiful, but wears it lightly, loving and supportive, yet frustrated with her husband's pessimism and pregnant for the first time but not showing yet.
