Frida and Diego: The Dove and the Elephant explores the passionate, turbulent marriage of legendary artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. From their early years in San Francisco, Detroit and New York, the play follows two fiercely independent artists struggling to reconcile love, ambition, politics, infidelity and the demands of their art. As Frida emerges from the shadow of her celebrated husband to become an artist in her own right, their unconventional marriage is tested, broken and ultimately reinvented. Drawn from their extraordinary lives, letters and writings, The Dove and the Elephant is an intimate portrait of two artists who discovered they could neither live together nor remain apart.
