The Soap Maker
Project Summary
The Soap Maker marks French auteur Claire Denis' return to genre territory, this time tackling a cannibalistic crime drama she's co-writing with longtime collaborator Andrew Litvack. The film draws from the notorious case of Italy's Leonarda Cianciulli, who murdered three women in the central Italian town of Correggio during the late 1930s and early 1940s, dissolving their remains with chemicals and incorporating what was left into household goods she shared with her community. The project is being produced by Gerry Pass for Chrome Entertainment, Sacha Ben Harroche for Felix Culpa, and Ivy Freeman-Attwood for Silkscreen, with Riley Keough and Gina Gammell executive producing. After being shopped at Berlin's EFM in 2025, the film has now gained traction and is planned as Denis' next feature. Production is expected to take place on location in Italy, where the original crimes occurred.
