Project Summary
The Resurrection of the Christ is Mel Gibson's ambitious two-part follow-up to his 2004 film The Passion of the Christ, now in post-production after wrapping a 134-day shoot across multiple locations in Italy. Gibson directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Randall Wallace, with Icon Productions producing and Lionsgate distributing worldwide. Principal photography concluded in Rome at Cinecittà Studios, with additional filming in Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi, and Matera. The production features an entirely new cast led by Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus and Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, with Robrecht Heyvaert serving as cinematographer. Gibson has described the films as exploring Christ's time in hell, featuring supernatural elements and battles between fallen angels. Part One is scheduled for theatrical release on May 6, 2027, with Part Two following on May 25, 2028.
