Project Summary

Blanco marks director Félix Viscarret's return to the subject of Basque terrorism following his acclaimed work on HBO's Patria. The film reconstructs the two harrowing days in July 1997 when Miguel Ángel Blanco, a 29-year-old councilman from Ermua, was kidnapped by ETA, sparking massive nationwide protests before his murder. Developed by producer Kiko Martínez at Nadie es Perfecto in collaboration with journalists Jon Sistiaga and Jimmy Guerra, the project draws on extensive journalistic research and firsthand testimony to follow the Basque reporters who covered the crisis. Production companies Nadie es Perfecto and Euskadi Movie are producing, with Netflix participating and Universal Pictures International Spain handling theatrical distribution. The eight-million-euro production is scheduled to shoot from October 5, 2026, with a July 9, 2027 theatrical release timed to the 30th anniversary of Blanco's death. Cast and specific filming locations will be announced in coming weeks.
