About

BBC Two is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the BBC, serving as the corporation's second flagship channel. Launched on 21 April 1964 as BBC2, it covers a wide range of subject matter including comedy, drama, documentaries, arts, and current affairs, with a remit to broadcast programmes of depth and substance. It is funded by the UK television licence fee and carries no commercial advertising, and was notably Europe's first channel to broadcast regularly in colour from 1 July 1967. Since 2021, BBC Two no longer has a standalone channel controller — editorial oversight sits within the BBC's genre-based directorial structure, reporting to the Chief Content Officer.
