In the 1960s and ’70s, NASA barred women from becoming astronauts, insisting only male military test pilots had “the right stuff.” By 1978, the agency reversed course, selecting six trailblazing women—Sally Ride, Judy Resnik, Anna Fisher, Kathy Sullivan, Shannon Lucid, and Rhea Seddon—from 8,000 applicants.
