Project Summary
Perma Red follows Louise White Elk’s relentless struggle for independence on the Flathead Indian Reservation in the 1940s. Raised by her Grandmother Magpie, Louise’s life is shaped by loss—her parents’ absence, boarding school trauma, and separation from her family. She’s drawn to Baptiste Yellowknife, whose spiritual strength and dangerous intensity create a haunting bond. Tribal officer Charlie Kicking Woman and the powerful Harvey Stoner also pursue her, forming a tense love triangle. Earling’s evocative prose explores the violence and resilience of Indigenous women, capturing Louise’s fight for survival with haunting beauty and raw emotional depth.
