Project Summary
Laughs in Spanish (2027) is a theatrical production written by Alexis Scheer, directed by Laura Alcalá Baker. The play centers on MARIANA, a half-Colombian/half-Jewish woman in her late 20s to early 30s, born and raised in Miami, who directs Studio Six — an art gallery participating in Art Basel — while navigating a complicated relationship with her glamorous Colombian mother ESTELLA, a movie star born in Medellín. The production will play at City Theatre Company in Pittsburgh, PA, followed by a run at Geva Theatre in Rochester, NY. The playwright notes that the production will incorporate Latin dance styles in transitions between scenes.
