Land of the Savages
Project Summary
Land of the Savages is a period drama from Chilean director Fernando Guzzoni, whose previous film Blanquita won the Silver Lion for best screenplay at Venice in 2022. The project is being presented at the Venice Gap-Financing Market in September 2026, seeking closing finance as it moves toward production. Édgar Ramírez and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart are attached to star as Elías, a powerful slave-owning businessman haunted by nightmares of his past, and Francisco, a controversial abolitionist. Set in 1850, the film examines Chile's largely erased history of Black enslavement and the formation of Chilean elites' European-centered identity. Guzzoni co-wrote the screenplay with Chilean playwright Pablo Manzi. The production is being produced by Oso Films in co-production with Foton Pictures, with Colombia, the United States, and Chile as co-production countries.
