Woody Allen is heading back to Europe. His 51st feature film, an ensemble romantic comedy set entirely in Madrid, is now targeting an October 5, 2026 principal photography start, giving working professionals in the film industry a meaningful runway to pursue one of the more distinctive international production opportunities of next year. The production had originally been planned for spring 2026 before being pushed to the fall, and with cameras-up still more than a year out, the hiring pipeline for key crew is in its early stages but moving. If a Madrid-based or internationally mobile shoot is on your radar, this is the time to get on the radar of the producers.

Allen is directing and writing the project himself, as he has done throughout his entire career. Now in his late eighties, he remains one of the few filmmaker-writers working at this scale who exercises complete creative control over every script he produces. His track record with European location films is particularly relevant here: Midnight in Paris won him his fourth Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2012, Vicky Cristina Barcelona earned Penélope Cruz an Oscar and remains one of his most commercially successful films of the past two decades, and Match Point revitalized his career with critics when it shot in London back in 2005. The pattern is well established. When Allen takes his operation to a European capital, the city becomes a co-star, the ensemble tends to be distinguished, and the production draws on a mix of local and internationally recruited crew. The working title currently in use among the producing team is WASP 2026, shorthand for Woody Allen Spring Project, a holdover from the originally planned start window.

The producing infrastructure behind this film is a genuine international collaboration. Gravier Productions is Allen's own production company, the entity that has backed the majority of his work over the past fifteen-plus years and which gives him the operational continuity his films depend on. Wanda Visión and The Mediapro Studio are both significant Spanish media entities, with Mediapro in particular being one of the largest audiovisual production and distribution groups in the Spanish-speaking world, with extensive infrastructure across Spain and Latin America. 3SIX9 Studios rounds out the producing quartet. The film carries an estimated budget of approximately $12 million, with roughly 3 million euros coming from public investment through the Madrid Regional Government and the Madrid City Council. That public funding comes with contractual obligations: the finished film's title must include the word Madrid, and no fewer than 15 percent of scenes must be shot at identifiable outdoor locations within the Madrid region. Those requirements are not incidental to the production design challenge, they are central to it.

Madrid is a compelling shoot location by any measure, and the incentive structure here makes it especially attractive. Spain has invested aggressively in building out its production infrastructure over the past decade, and Madrid in particular has become a go-to destination for international features and streaming productions. The city offers a dense concentration of stage facilities, a well-developed local crew base across most departments, and a historic urban fabric that photographs beautifully. For crews experienced on international productions, Spain's ICAS (Instituto de Crédito y Ahorro) and regional incentives, combined with direct municipal investment as seen here, have made Madrid increasingly competitive with other European production centers. The production is expected to wrap by December 31, 2027, suggesting a shooting schedule of roughly two to three months within that October 2026 start window, which would be consistent with Allen's typically efficient production pace. He is not a director known for extended schedules or bloated day counts.

In terms of crew signals, this is a $12 million feature with international ambitions and a festival premiere target, which places it firmly in the mid-budget prestige tier. The genre is romantic comedy with ensemble dynamics, which means the production will lean on a strong casting department to assemble its still-unannounced company of actors. Allen's films typically require a production designer with a strong feel for urban environments and period-inflected contemporary aesthetics, a cinematographer comfortable shooting on location in natural light (Allen's visual grammar has long favored that approach, particularly since his collaborations with Vilmos Zsigmond, Gordon Willis, and more recently Vittorio Storaro), and a costume department capable of dressing an ensemble cast with distinct, character-defining wardrobes. The outdoor location requirements baked into the public funding agreement also signal that the locations department will carry significant weight on this production. A fluent Spanish-speaking locations manager or a strong local location scout partnership will be essential given the contractual specificity of the Madrid shooting requirements.

For crew based in Madrid or with established relationships in the Spanish production community, this is worth tracking closely right now. For internationally mobile department heads and key crew, the October 2026 start gives you a reasonable timeline to make yourself known to the producing team. Full production contacts, the current crew list as it develops, production office details, and scheduling updates are available in the complete listing at ProductionList.com. Given that this production is still assembling its ensemble and has not yet announced a cinematographer or production designer, the most senior creative crew positions remain open.
