Mike Flanagan (born May 20, 1978, Salem, Massachusetts) is an American writer, director, producer, and editor widely regarded as the preeminent voice in contemporary horror. A graduate of Towson University's Electronic Media and Film department, he broke through with the Kickstarter-funded Absentia (2011) and built a celebrated filmography including Oculus, Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, as well as creating and showrunning five acclaimed Netflix horror anthology series. In 2024 he founded Red Room Pictures, and in 2026 signed an exclusive multiyear overall TV deal with Amazon MGM Studios; upcoming projects include the Carrie series for Prime Video, a new Exorcist film for Blumhouse/Universal, an adaptation of The Mist for Warner Bros., and he is in talks to showrun the Warhammer 40,000 series at Amazon.
