About

The Sedgwick Theater is a historic 1928 Art Deco movie palace located at 7137 Germantown Avenue in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Designed by architect William Harold Lee and originally opened as a 1,636-seat cinema, it screened films until 1966 and later served as a community cultural center before becoming the home of the Quintessence Theatre Group in 2010. In July 2024, Quintessence purchased the building for $2.3 million and is undertaking major renovations to expand seating to 250 and restore the historic structure, with a planned grand reopening in late 2026 or early 2027 in time for the building's 100th anniversary in 2028. The theater is a centerpiece of the Mount Airy Historic District and a landmark of Philadelphia's arts and cultural heritage.
