About

Quintessence Theatre Group is Philadelphia's text-based, actor-focused classical repertory theatre, dedicated to bringing epic works of classic drama and literature to the contemporary stage. Founded in 2010 by Alexander Burns and Pamela Reichen, the company is in residence at the historic 1928 Sedgwick Theater in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Northwest Philadelphia. Quintessence became Philadelphia's 18th Actors' Equity Theatre as a Small Professional Theater in 2018, and is known for its 'progressive classics' or 'classics forward' approach — engaging contemporary aesthetics and social values with the play without modernizing or rewriting the original text.
