One of the most beloved musicals in the American canon is heading to sea, and casting is open now. Royal Caribbean Entertainment, in association with Concord Theatricals, has announced a full stage production of The Wizard of Oz set to run aboard the Icon of the Seas beginning March 2027. Rehearsals will take place in Miami, Florida, and the production is expected to run through April 2028, making this a long-term contract opportunity that performing artists, stage managers, and production staff should be actively pursuing.

Directing the production is Jason Capewell, a seasoned hand in the world of large-scale cruise ship entertainment who has built a reputation staging high-production-value theatrical work in the uniquely demanding environment of a ship's onboard theater. Choreography is handled by Stuart Rogers, whose work in the cruise and live entertainment sector has brought a contemporary physicality to classic material. Together, Capewell and Rogers represent the kind of creative partnership that knows how to balance theatrical storytelling with the logistical realities of performing eight or more shows a week on the open ocean. Casting for the production is being led by Greg Graham and Ian Laskowski, a duo well known in the theatrical and entertainment casting world for staffing large-scale live entertainment contracts. Agents and performers who have not yet submitted to this team should do so without delay given the long runway of this contract.

There is a critical detail performers and their representation need to understand before submitting: artists hired for The Wizard of Oz will also be contracted to perform in The Effectors, an original Royal Caribbean Signature Production that is already part of the Icon of the Seas entertainment lineup. This is a dual-show contract, which is standard for Royal Caribbean's onboard entertainment model but essential to know upfront. Performers should be prepared to demonstrate range across both a classic book musical and a high-energy original production. The casting team will almost certainly be looking for triple threats with strong stamina, adaptability, and comfort working in a repertory format.

The production is a partnership between Royal Caribbean Entertainment, the in-house content and production arm of one of the world's largest cruise lines, and Concord Theatricals, the licensing and production powerhouse formed from the merger of The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization, Tams-Witmark, Samuel French, and The Andrew Lloyd Webber Music catalogue. Concord's involvement signals that this is a legitimately produced theatrical staging, not a scaled-down or simplified ship-board revue. Royal Caribbean has invested significantly in full Broadway-caliber productions across its fleet in recent years, particularly on its newer ships, and the Icon of the Seas, which launched in January 2024 as the world's largest cruise ship, represents the top tier of that investment. Productions aboard the Icon are built and resourced to match the scale of the vessel itself.

Rehearsals are slated to begin in Miami, Florida, which serves as the home port for the Icon of the Seas and the natural logistical hub for Royal Caribbean's entertainment operations. Miami has a robust talent and production community, and Royal Caribbean maintains production and rehearsal infrastructure in the area specifically to support its fleet. Following rehearsals, the production sails on a Caribbean itinerary out of Miami before the ship repositions to Galveston, Texas, where it will continue on a Caribbean itinerary from that port. For performers and crew, this means the contract spans two departure ports and an extended run aboard one of the most high-profile vessels in the cruise industry. Living accommodations and meals are provided onboard for the duration of the contract, as is standard for ship-based entertainment positions.

The source material is the gold standard of American family fantasy. The Wizard of Oz draws from L. Frank Baum's original novel with the iconic score featuring music by Herbert Stothart alongside the Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg songbook, including standards like Somewhere Over the Rainbow, If I Only Had a Brain, and Ding Dong the Witch is Dead. A production of this scale, with this score, in this venue, will require a full complement of theatrical talent: strong principal performers capable of anchoring the classic roles of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and Glinda, as well as a full ensemble with strong vocal and dance capabilities. The technical production demands aboard a modern Royal Caribbean ship are considerable, with sophisticated fly systems, LED stage technology, and full lighting and sound rigs that rival mid-sized Broadway touring houses.

With production beginning in March 2027 and the run extending over a full year, this is one of the longer-commitment performing contracts currently in the marketplace, and the combination of a beloved title, a well-resourced production company, and Concord Theatricals' involvement makes it an attractive one. The casting process is active right now, and given the lead time required to audition, contract, and rehearse talent for a production of this complexity, professionals who are interested should not wait. Whether you are a performer targeting the principal roles, an agent submitting your clients, or a theatrical stage manager looking for a long-term ship contract, this is where the opportunity starts.
