About
The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. Established by an Act of Congress in 2003 and opened on September 24, 2016, as the 19th museum of the Smithsonian Institution, the nearly 400,000-square-foot facility sits on the National Mall adjacent to the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The museum holds nearly 45,000 artifacts, operates the award-winning Searchable Museum digital platform, and has welcomed more than 13 million visitors since opening, making it one of the nation's most visited cultural institutions.
