About

HBO Sports was the sports programming division of Home Box Office (HBO), a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. Founded in the early 1970s and rising to prominence as the gold standard in sports television, it was renowned for its boxing franchise (HBO World Championship Boxing), the Emmy-winning sports journalism magazine Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, the reality docuseries Hard Knocks (co-produced with NFL Films), and the 24/7 all-access franchise. The division was effectively wound down circa 2020 when then-president Peter Nelson departed and remaining programming (documentaries, Real Sports) was folded into HBO's existing documentary group; Real Sports ended in late 2023 and HBO has since exited sports as a standalone division, with Warner Bros. Discovery's sports operations now centered on TNT Sports.
