Akil Productions

Akil Productions is a television and film production company co-founded in 2000 by husband-and-wife duo Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil (originally operated as Happy Camper Productions until 2008). The company is known for creating and producing culturally impactful, Black-centered scripted content across broadcast, cable, and streaming, including landmark series such as Girlfriends, The Game, Being Mary Jane, Black Lightning, and Love Is___. In 2016, the company signed a multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, out of which it produced flagship series for The CW and OWN. Mara Brock Akil subsequently launched a separate production banner, story27, under a Netflix deal in 2021, while Akil Productions continues to operate as Salim Akil's primary production entity.
