The much-loved spy spoof franchise "Johnny English" is set to return to the big screen, with production on the fourth film reportedly beginning this summer. Six years after the release of "Johnny English Strikes Again," Rowan Atkinson is slated to reprise his role as the bumbling yet endearing secret agent.
The new installment, which will see filming take place in Malta and the UK starting in June, continues the successful collaboration between Universal Pictures and its subsidiary Working Title Films. While the plot details are still under wraps, fans can expect the same blend of comedy and action that has made the franchise a global hit.
The "Johnny English" series first launched in 2003, with Atkinson starring alongside Ben Miller, Natalie Imbruglia, and John Malkovich. The film's success led to two sequels: "Johnny English Reborn" in 2011, featuring a new cast including Gillian Anderson, Dominic West, Rosamund Pike, and Daniel Kaluuya, and "Johnny English Strikes Again" in 2018.
Atkinson had previously hinted that a fourth film might not happen, telling fans during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, "I doubt it but thank you very much for implying you'd like to see another one. But at the same time... never say never." Fortunately for fans, the beloved character of Johnny English will indeed make a return.
The news of the upcoming production comes after renewed interest in Atkinson's work, particularly following Sir Tony Robinson's reprise of his role as Baldrick from the "Blackadder" series for a Comic Relief sketch last year. This rekindled hope among fans for a possible return of the "Blackadder" series as well.
As "Johnny English 4" gears up for production, excitement builds around what new comedic adventures await the world's most unlikely secret agent. With Atkinson back in the lead role, audiences can look forward to another round of laughs and misadventures when the film eventually hits theaters.
