"Happy Gilmore 2" Set to Begin Production in September

After nearly three decades, fans of the classic sports comedy Happy Gilmore are in for a treat as a sequel is officially set to enter production in September 2024. The original film, directed by Dennis Dugan and released over 28 years ago, became a beloved hit for its unique blend of humor and sports action. Adam Sandler, who starred as the failed ice hockey player turned golf sensation, Happy Gilmore, will reprise his role, bringing the character back to the big screen.

Production for Happy Gilmore 2 is slated to start on September 5th, 2024, with filming expected to wrap up by November 18th, 2024. Unlike the first film, which was shot in Vancouver, Canada, the sequel will be filmed in New Jersey, USA, marking a significant change in location for the franchise. Kyle Newacheck, a Netflix alum known for his work on Murder Mystery—which also starred Sandler and broke viewership records—has been confirmed as the director for the sequel. Newacheck’s experience with both comedy and Sandler makes him a fitting choice to helm this long-awaited project. His work on FX’s What We Do In The Shadows further highlights his ability to blend humor with unique storytelling. Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy, the duo behind the original script, are returning to pen the screenplay for Happy Gilmore 2. Herlihy has a long history of successful collaborations with Sandler, having worked together on over twenty projects. Their reunion for this sequel promises to deliver the same comedic energy that made the first film a hit. As of now, Adam Sandler is the only confirmed cast member, with no official word on whether Christopher McDonald will return as the iconic antagonist Shooter McGavin, or if Julie Bowen will reprise her role as Virginia Venit. However, fans are hopeful that more of the original cast will return to bring continuity and nostalgia to the new film. Happy Gilmore 2 is currently in pre-production at Netflix, where anticipation is building for what could be one of the streaming platform’s most highly anticipated releases. The return of Happy Gilmore is sure to bring back fond memories for longtime fans and introduce the character to a new generation of viewers. With a strong creative team and the beloved original star back on board, the sequel is shaping up to be a major event in the world of comedy film production.
