Paul Joseph Schrader (born July 22, 1946, Grand Rapids, Michigan) is one of American cinema's most influential screenwriters and directors, first rising to prominence as the writer of Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980). His directorial career spans over 25 films including American Gigolo (1980), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), and First Reformed (2017), the latter earning him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He is best known for his recurring 'Man in a Room' character studies of isolated, morally troubled men confronting existential crises — a thread that continues into his latest work, The Basics of Philosophy (2026), which premiered out of competition at Venice. Active into his 80s, Schrader is a New York-based filmmaker who remains one of the most prolific and outspoken voices in independent American cinema.
