Neema Barnette is a pioneering American film and television director and producer, born in Harlem, New York, who made history as the first African-American woman to direct a primetime network sitcom (What's Happening Now!!, 1986) and the first African-American woman to receive a three-picture deal from a major studio (Columbia/Sony Pictures). Over a career spanning five decades, she has directed more than 60 hours of network television, 10 television movies, and 4 feature films — including Civil Brand (Sundance selection) and Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day (2012) — earning an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, NAACP Image Award, DGA nomination, and many other accolades. Her recent television credits include Queen Sugar, Genius: Aretha, Luke Cage, Harlem, Raising Dion, Reasonable Doubt, and The Equalizer; she is also Executive Producer of the Black History Mini Docs web series and an educator at USC, UCLA, and AFI.
