Jo-Issa Rae Diop (born January 12, 1985), known professionally as Issa Rae, is an American actress, writer, and producer who first gained widespread recognition with her YouTube web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl (2011–2013) and her 2015 New York Times bestselling memoir of the same name. She achieved mainstream acclaim as the co-creator, co-writer, and star of the Peabody Award–winning HBO comedy series Insecure (2016–2021), earning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. On the big screen she has starred in Barbie (2023), American Fiction (2023), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), and One of Them Days (producer, 2025). In September 2020, Rae consolidated her entertainment ventures under HOORAE, a multi-faceted media company encompassing HOORAE Film & TV, the audio label Raedio (in partnership with Atlantic Records), talent-management division ColorCreative, and marketing arm FÊTE.
