Derek Kolstad (born April 4, 1974) is an American screenwriter and film producer best known as the creator of the John Wick franchise, which began in 2014. Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, he studied business administration at Taylor University before moving to California to pursue screenwriting, breaking through after nearly two decades with the spec script that became John Wick. Beyond the Wick trilogy, he wrote Nobody (2021) starring Bob Odenkirk, co-executive produced The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for Disney+, and is a principal of production company Story Kitchen. He is currently active on multiple projects including Nobody 2 (2025), the Netflix anime Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and the feature Painter.
