Barry Jenkins (born November 19, 1979, Miami, FL) is an Academy Award-winning American filmmaker known for his lyrical visual style, emotionally resonant storytelling, and empathetic character work centered on Black identity and experience. His breakout film Moonlight (2016) won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (shared with Tarell Alvin McCraney), and Best Supporting Actor; he followed it with If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) and the Amazon limited series The Underground Railroad (2021), which won the DGA Award and Golden Globe for Best Limited Series. His 2024 studio debut Mufasa: The Lion King became a major commercial success, and his upcoming projects include the sci-fi thriller The Natural Order (Universal/Glen Powell) and the Ronnie Spector biopic Be My Baby (A24/Zendaya). He produces through his banner Pastel with partners Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, which holds first-look deals at HBO/Max and A24.
