The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is a not-for-profit charitable cultural organization and one of the most prestigious and largest publicly attended film festivals in the world, founded in 1976 and held annually in early September in downtown Toronto. Its permanent home, TIFF Lightbox, features five cinemas, a Film Reference Library, year-round programming, and event facilities. Beyond the September festival, TIFF operates year-round initiatives including TIFF Cinematheque, the Donald Shebib TIFF Film Circuit (a national distribution program), TIFF Next Wave, and the newly launched TIFF: The Market content market. The organization generates an estimated annual economic impact of $240 million CAD and is an official qualifying festival for the Academy Awards Short Film competition.
