About
Cinema City Enterprises Ltd. (also known as Cinema City & Films Co. and Cinema City Company Limited) was a major Hong Kong film production and distribution studio active from 1979 to 1991. Founded by actor-comedians Raymond Wong, Karl Maka, and Dean Shek — with key creative figures including Tsui Hark, John Woo, Ringo Lam, Johnnie To, Eric Tsang, Teddy Robin, and Nansun Shi — the company was one of Hong Kong cinema's most commercially dominant studios throughout the 1980s, producing a catalogue of 88 films spanning drama, comedy, action, and horror. The company is best known for the landmark 'Aces Go Places' franchise and John Woo's 'A Better Tomorrow' (1986), which became a defining work of Hong Kong action cinema. After financial difficulties and the departure of its founding members, Cinema City dissolved in 1991, with the main entity restructured by Raymond Wong into Mandarin Films Limited.
