Dr. Uwe Boll (born June 22, 1965, Wermelskirchen, Germany) is an independent German filmmaker with a doctorate in literary studies (University of Siegen, 1994) who has written, directed, and produced over 40 feature films across a career spanning more than three decades. He rose to international notoriety in the early-to-mid 2000s for video game adaptations including House of the Dead (2003), Alone in the Dark (2005), and BloodRayne (2005), before pivoting to provocative, politically-driven independent films such as Rampage, Darfur, and Assault on Wall Street. After a hiatus running the Bauhaus restaurant in Vancouver (2015–2020), he returned to filmmaking full-time and is now highly active from Mainz, Germany, with First Shift (2024) becoming a surprise Paramount+ hit (debuting at #2 and staying in the top 10 for 20+ weeks), followed by RUN (2025), Citizen Vigilante (2026), and two First Shift sequels and 23 Years Later – The Castle of the Dead currently in post-production.
