About
Smithsonian Channel is an American premium cable and satellite television network owned by Paramount Global through its SNI/SI Networks L.L.C. subsidiary, featuring documentary programming on history, science, nature, air and space, and popular culture inspired by the Smithsonian Institution. Originally launched in September 2007 as a joint venture between the Smithsonian Institution and Showtime Networks, the channel transitioned to full Paramount/Showtime ownership in 2019 while retaining a content collaboration and licensing relationship with the Smithsonian. The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is a frequent and notable content partner of the Smithsonian Channel, with the Channel producing and gifting media for NMAAHC exhibitions and co-presenting documentary content tied to the museum's programming, including the 'Afrofuturism: The Origin Story' documentary. NMAAHC itself is the nation's only museum devoted exclusively to documenting African American life, history, and culture, opened September 24, 2016, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as the 19th museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
